Schools Roundup

Local high school students can expect to continue receiving upgraded textbooks and equipment in upcoming years, thanks to the Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation, which raised $153,000 this school year -the largest amount in its 17-year history. This year's contributions bring the foundation's total donations to the district to $1 million.

Foundation members presented the district with a check May 1.

Money raised each school year through the foundation is used to help fund the Tutorial Center, college and career centers and to purchase textbooks and science equipment for Mountain View and Los Altos high schools - amenities that would be beyond the reach of the regular budget, said superintendent Rich Fischer.

St. Simon becomes home to 'Old West'

Fourth graders at St. Simon School in Los Altos got a glimpse at what life was like in early California during the school's 13th annual California History Day May 12.

About 67 students dressed in "Old West" attire for the all-day program that included hands-on activities relating to different aspects of life in early California, such as making tortillas, clay pots and adobe bricks.

The day marked the completion of the students' California history projects, which included weeks of in-depth research on specific topics and visits to historic sites throughout California, including the Empire Mine, Columbia State Historic Park, Mission San Diego and the La Brea Tar Pits.
