Sen. Cranston proud of work for wilderness preservation

Alan Cranston, a longtime resident of Los Altos, got his start in politics at Mountain View High School as president of the Boys League. He eventually spent 24 years serving in the U.S. Senate (1969 to 1993). He was interviewed at his home in Los Altos by Erin Finnegan in 1995 and by Paul Nyberg in January 1998.

Led by timely hitting by Scott Deacon and Mike Shepherd and strong relief pitching from Jim Shattock, the Los Altos High alumni baseball team overcame a six-run deficit May 15 to defeat the Eagles varsity 16-9 in the annual Bob Baird Memorial Alumni Game.

The future appears bright for the Los Altos High baseball program. The Eagles' frosh-soph squad this season placed second to Santa Clara in the SCVAL El Camino Division with a 12-6 record. Raul Ontiveros was named co-MVP of the division, hitting .525 with 32 RBI and three homers. Named to the all-league team were Wesley Battle, Kevin Buurma, Matthew Kramer, Cameron Matthews, Thomas Roux, Benjamin Slotnick and Nicholas Whiting. "This team played with a lot of heart," coach Gabriel Stewart said.
