Louise Clappe, a chronicler of California's Gold Rush mining camps, will recount her experiences in "History Alive! Chautauqua," a free performance at 7 p.m. on June 16 at Los Altos Library.

Clappe, who wrote under the pen name of Dame Shirley, will be portrayed by scholar Kate Magruder. She co-founded the Ukiah Players Theatre and teaches humanities and theater arts at Mendocino College.

The California Council for the Humanities is presenting the "History Alive!" program as part of a project commemorating the people and events leading to statehood 150 years ago.
