Gorin School of Music performs at CSA picnic

The Gorin School of Music will perform classical music and songs from musical shows at the Chefs Who Care picnic, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., June 14, in Cuesta Park, Mountain View. Proceeds benefit the Community Services Agency.

Doris Williams will sing songs by Porter, Hammerstein, Ker, and Loesser, accompanied by Svetlana Elenkova. Pianists will perform selections by Chopin, Gershwin and others. The Peninsula Children's Chorale also will provide entertainment.

Organizers are preparing for 200-250 diners, who can enjoy Armadillo Willy's baby back ribs and barbecue chicken.

Cost of the picnic is $17. Reservations are due by Friday. For more information, call 968-0836.

Farmers' Market opens at Foothill College

The 11th annual California Certified Los Altos Farmers' Market will open 9 a.m., Saturday, in parking lot C at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. The market will be open every Saturday until Nov. 20.

Restaurateur-chef Jesse Cool and the Green Grocer II, Pete Carcione, will be part of the special festivities on opening day.

Approximately 40 growers and producers will offer patrons such items as bing cherries from Hollister, vine-ripened tomatoes, sweet white corn, organic vegetables and berries from Watsonville.

Oven fresh breads, ocean fish and cut flowers will be among the opening day offerings.

There is a $2 parking fee at the Foothill College parking lots.

LAH cleanup set for Saturday

Los Altos Hills will hold a clean-up day 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday. Drop-off locations include the town hall parking lot; Magdalena Road at Interstate 280; Foothill College parking lot C; the Westwind Barn at Altamont and Black Mountain roads; and Page Mill Road at Arastradero Road.

Residents may bring non-recyclable solid waste and trash, and up to 30 gallons per household each of debris from building construction or demolition, and concrete, asphalt, rock and dirt.

Covington pool party open to community

The S.P.L.A.S.H. group invites the community to kick off the summer with a pool party from noon to 4 p.m., June 12 at Covington Pool, 201 Covington Road.

The party will include free swimming and free barbecue by Clarke's Charcoal Broiler. The event is hosted by the Los Altos Masters swim group; by S.P.L.A.S.H., Swimmers Promoting Los Altos Aquatics, Safety and Health; and in cooperation with the Recreation Department of the city of Los Altos.

Organizers will share plans for a new community aquatic center, as this will be the last summer at the Covington Pool. The site will be closing because of the renovation of Covington School, which is scheduled to reopen in 2001.
