Patricia Bubenik, superintendent of the Mountain View School District, said "In the past ten years, many of our kids have participated in new youth activities, in part due to the work of the Challenge Team. It's been a great success, and the Team's been lucky to have strong community involvement and the support of leaders, like Joe Simitian." Simitian was selected as the 1999 Champion of Youth because of his long interest in and work on behalf of children. He served two terms on the Palo Alto School Board; and five years of service as Palo Alto councilmember, two of them as mayor. During the past three years, he has held the position of Vice-Chair of the Board of Supervisors' Children and Families Committee. "I am proud the Challenge Team chose to honor me with the Champion of Youth Award," Simitian said. "It is essential that we work together as partners to meet the needs of our kids and do whatever we can to help them lead healthy, productive lives; and that's exactly what the Challenge Team is all about." The Challenge Team, chaired by Gay Krause, is a community-based, nonprofit partnership. The team links students, school districts, police departments, community organizations, parent groups, and health service groups with the goal of preventing alcohol and tobacco abuse and other negative pressures among youth in our community. Previous recipients of the Champions of Youth Award include Mayor Mary Lou Zoglin of Mountain View; Dianne McKenna, former Santa Clara county supervisor; Judge Charles Hayden; and Judge Stephen Manley. |
