LA Council considers Main/First proposals

In a closed session following its May 25 meeting, the Los Altos City Council considered the eight proposals it received for development of the city-owned downtown corner at First and Main streets.

But no one is talking about what the proposals are. Because they could involve real estate negotiations, the Brown Act regarding open meetings allows the council to consider them in closed session.

"Staff will be going through and evaluating the proposals," said Los Altos City Manager Phil Rose, following the closed session. "It will take some time to get through them because we asked for a lot of material," he said.

At some point there will be public input. "But not anytime soon," Rose said.

Blue-ribbon committee begins budget review

The 29-member citizen blue ribbon committee, chaired by Bob Grimm, began its review of the city's budget last Thursday.

The committee had three documents from the city that outlined current budget needs, areas for possible staff increases and unfunded capital projects the community may wish to fund.

In addition to staff material, the committee also had a list of priorities from the city council, which council members put together following three special sessions the week before. Once the blue-ribbon committee completes its work, recommendations will come back to the city council in June. The fiscal year begins July 1. The committee will meet Thursday night at the Hillview Community Center.

LA Council funds ball field for Rosita

The Los Altos City Council approved funds for a baseball diamond at the city-owned 5.5-acre site at 401 Rosita Ave. The ball field will be in addition to the two soccer fields that the city has had build during the past months.

The ball field should be complete by the end of the summer and ready for use at the beginning of the baseball season next March, officials said.

The funds will come from several sources: $35,000 will come from the city's capital projects fund; all of Councilman Francis La Poll's council salary, which to date for the past four years is about $12,000.

"We expect to contribute the majority of the money to this project," said John Love, a representative of the Pony League in Los Altos.

This field will be used for 13- to 16-year-olds, said Skip Mueller, president of Pony League Baseball.
