Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian, following up on a pledge for better county communications in the unincorporated pockets of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, presided over a May 26 "town hall" meeting at Hillview Community Center in Los Altos. Simitian estimated more than 100 residents came.

Simitian said he initiated the meeting after last year's discussions over housing designs and development. However, the chief resident concerns at last week's meeting centered on road work, drainage and garbage issues.

Accompanying Simitian at the meeting were members of the county planning and building departments, the sheriff's office, fire department officials and the Los Altos Garbage Company.

"Part of the goal was to have everyone in the room so if someone had a question, it would get answered," Simitian said.

He noted road work questions were directed at Page Mill Road and Oregon Expressway, which would be addressed this summer, he said. Work on Foothill Expressway would start during the summer of 2000 or 2001, he said.

Simitian said the county sent notices about the meeting to 1,600 households.
