Los Altos High School students Gilbert Hwang, Chris Lin and Michael Chen were recently named to the California Music Educators Association All-State Honor Orchestra - one of the state's most prestigious musical ensembles. They performed as members of the ensemble March 27 in Ontario.

Hwang, a junior, plays cello; Lin, a sophomore, plays bassoon; and Chen, a senior, plays flute.

Anneliese V. Lodge, a 1990 graduate of Los Altos High School, will be pursuing a master's degree in journalsim at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalsim this fall. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Calfiornai at Berkeley in 1994.

Lodge is the daughter of Nelson and Monica Lodge of Los Altos.

She currently lives in New York City and works for the interactive division of Time Warner.

The following students recently qualified as National Merit Scholarship Finalists: Andrew Hill, Samuel Jeng, David Kaplan, Omid Karkouti, Eva Kaye, Elizabeth Miller, Paul Ruvolo, Aaron Staple, Ognen Stojanovski, Danny Vorhaus and Emily Wildanger all of Los Altos; Mary Pitts and Julianne Prescop both of Mountain View; and Aruna Balakrishnan and Elaine Chao both of Los Altos Hills.

Egan Intermediate School teachers Marjorie Gray, Jeanette Keon and Shannon McLaughlin were among the 20,000 science teachers and educational leaders to attend the National Science Teachers Association National Convention recently, where astronaut John Glenn and Richard Riley spoke.

Kousuke Anan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Taiken Anan of Los Altos, made the dean's list at Wahsington University in St. Louis recently for his academic achievement during fall 1998. Anan is a graduate of Homestead High School.

Elizabeth Antoinette Papagni, a 1994 graduate of Los Altos High School, was recently admitted to the Harvard Graduate School of Psychology. She graduated from Simmons College in Boston.

Michael Austin, son of Dennis R. and Janet A. Austin of Los Altos, recently appeared in the Whitman College produciton of "SubUrbia." He is a 1996 graduate of Mountain View High School.

Julie Lynn Collinson and Judd Golladay Stiff III, both of Los Altos, and Gina Marie Biegel of Mountain View, were recently named to the dean's honor list for earning grade point averages of 3.75 or higher during winter quarter.

Eamon Briggs, son of Jonathan and Dionys Briggs of Los Altos Hills, was recently elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa at Colby College. Membership in the society ois one of the highest academic honors an undergraduate student can achieve.

Briggs is majoring in physics. He is a graduate of Henry M. Gunn Senior High School.

Catherine Cabot, daguther of Mathew A. and Christine H Cabot of Los Altos, and Catherine Barnes, daugther of John and Carolyn Barnes of Los Altos, recently earned Academic Distinction for the 1998 fall semester at Whitman College by earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Cabot is a 1997 graduate of Kings Academy.

Barnes is a a 1995 graduate of Los Altos High School, is studying foreign languages and literatures.

Patrick Quaid, son of Richard and Karen Quaid of Mountain View, was recently elected vice president of the Luther College Congregation Council for the 1998-99 academic year. Quaid is studying psychology.

Brooke A Rea and Elizabeth Beetem, both of Los Altos were recently named College Scholars for academic excellence during the fall term at Middlebury College in Vermont. A College Scholar represents the highest level of academic achievement at the school.

Amie E. Fernandez, daughter of Drs. William and Ellen Fernandez of Los Altos, was named to the dean's list at Middlebury College in Vermont. The dean's list is the second highest recognition for academic achievement at the school. .
