Student Profile

Name: Amasa West Warner

School: A fourth grader at Bullis-Purissima School in Los Altos Hills.

Highlights: Amasa's painting "Blinding of the Sun" recently won first place in the Los Altos School District's 1999 Art Contest sponsored by the Federated Women's Club of Los Altos. His piece qualified for the club's state-level art contest held last month. It won honorable mention.

Activities: This isn't the first time the young artist's work has earned recognition.

The 10-year-old's interest in drawing and painting has spanned most of his life. Over the years, he has entered and won various contests including honors at the 1997 Los Altos Art Docent contest and the 1998 Summer Art Contest sponsored by University Art Center.

"I can't remember the first time I painted," he said while going through a portfolio full of cards, watercolor paintings, cartoons and sketches that span back to when he was 2-years-old.

Amasa said he sketches and paints to pass the time. He carries a small sketch pad with him where ever he goes.

"I paint under my desk, in the garage or wherever I feel. It just comes naturally," he said about his work.

Amasa said he reading gives him ideas for his art pieces.

Amasa also creates what he calls "surf jewelry" - pieces made from thin rope and decorated with metal charms - under the name Vertigo. He sells his jewelry at local art festivals, including the Los Altos Art & Wine Festival.

Amasa also plays tennis, soccer, basketball and baseball.

Philosophy: "Put your mind to it, and don't get distracted by other things or you may not finish it. You have to have time," Amasa said about painting.

Future Plans: Amasa said he plans to enter more art contests. He also wants to try his hand at sculpture.
