Mountain View High didn't come home from the CCS individual tournament with any championships, but the Spartans did earn a pair of fifth-place ribbons.

Wen-Ai Yu took fifth in girls singles, while fellow seniors Seth Greenstein and Dat Tran combined to do the same in boys doubles.

Yu and the team of Greenstein-Tran both went 2-2 at the double-elimination tourney, held May 19-21 at Independence High in San Jose.

For coach Kelly Kuboyama, Mountain View's performance was a mixed bag.

"Seth and Dat played really well, and they finished where I expected," he said. "I was a little disappointed as far as Wen-Ai's concerned, because judging by the competition, I expected her to do a little better. But there was a lot of pressure on her."

Yu placed fourth in CCS last year, and only one of the players who finished above her took part in this season's competition.

St. Francis High played three-plus hours of softball against Mitty in the CCS Division II semifinals May 26, but resolved nothing.

The Lancers and Monarchs were tied at 1 after 10 innings when the game was called due do a curfew at PAL Stadium, St. Francis coach Barry Ivers said.

The contest was continued Friday afternoon after the Town Crier went to press.

If the second-seeded Lancers won, they played in last Saturday's final vs. No. 1 Carlmont.

St. Francis sophomore Adam Peterson was crowned CCS champion May 20 at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.

Peterson finished with a score of 478.95 in the 1-meter competition, easily beating runner-up and defending champion Gordon Blukis of Homestead High.

Blukis, a junior, recorded a score of 458.90. Both divers are neighbors and residents of Los Altos.

Turning to the girls, Gunn sophomore Ashlee Rosenthal took third with a score of 423.15.
