Los Altos High senior Andrew Hill has done it again.

The long-distance runner last week won his second scholar-athlete award in a month when he was named 1999 CIF Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

More than 480 nominations were received by the California Interscholastic Federation from among the 1,230 member schools. Samantha Piper of Coronado High was selected as the female winner.

Hill and Piper will receive a $2,000 scholarship to college and an expense paid trip to the state capitol in Sacramento Thursday where they will be honored by the legislature.

In addition, both students will be awarded plaques Sunday at a presentation held at the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.

"We continue to be dazzled by the quality of student-athletes nominated for this prestigious award," said Jack Hayes, CIF executive director. "Samantha Piper and Andrew Hill represent the very best scholar and athlete in the state of California."

At the end of April, Hill was honored as the Central Coast Section's top male scholar-athlete.

Stanford University-bound Hill ranks first in his class academically with a near-perfect 1590 SAT score. He plans to major in engineering/science at Stanford. He competed in cross country and track and field at Los Altos and intends to compete in both at Stanford as well.

As a freshman, Hill was named MVP of the cross country team and was an all-league selection. That spring, he set a league track and field record in the 3,200 meters. By his sophomore year, Hill was team captain in cross country and placed second in the CIF Central Coast Section in Division II. A year later, he was CCS champion in cross country in the Division I classification and, as a senior, he was third in the state meet in Division III. In track and field, Hill was a state meet qualifier as a junior and will represent Los Altos at this year's state meet in Sacramento.

Academically, Hill's accomplishments and accolades include being named to the National Honor Society as a junior. He was also a 1998 American High School Mathematics Examination Finalist this year was Best in Class in instrumental music

Hill also has been involved in several community service projects. He has served as a peer tutor in mathematics and was a student teacher in the summer session for Advancement Via Individual Determination, an academic development program for high potential/at-risk students funded by the Packard Foundation.

Additionally, Hill volunteered in the annual Junior Olympics Program within the Los Altos School District. He was elected treasurer for the class of 1999 and participated in Los Altos High marching band.
