Spurred by the play of four local girls, the North routed the South 85-65 May 15 in the annual Santa Clara Valley All-Star Basketball Game at San Jose City College. Leading the way for the North was Pinewood's Lauren Smith-Hams, who scored a game-high 21 points, hit three three-pointers and dished out six assists. The point guard was named the game's MVP. Also helping the North's cause was Gunn's Correnda Perkins (eight points) and Homestead's Michelle Wald (nine points, three steals) and Julie Speckels (four points).

Swimmers sought

The Los Altos-Mountain View Aquatics Club is scheduling tryouts for summer swimmers ages 5 through 18. The program begins June 21 and space is limited. Tryouts must be scheduled by June 18. For a schedule and more information, call 428-1269.

Hoop-It-Up returns

Hoop-It-Up makes it annual stop in the South Bay this Saturday and Sunday at San Jose's Evergreen Valley College. The three-on-three basketball tournament is expected to draw nearly 7,000 participants and 35,000 spectators. Players of all ages and abilities will be competing. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. For more information, call (888) 997-PLAY.

Special volunteers

Special Olympics of Santa Clara County is seeking coaches for softball and cycling. Practice begins in July and no experience is necessary.
