High School Athletes Of The Month

Holly Demeter - Los Altos track and field

olly Demeter is everything a coach could ask for in a student-athlete, says Lee Gutierrez, who heads up the Los Altos High track and field program.

"Holly's a very bright girl, she's meticulous and works extremely hard," Gutierrez said. "She's always motivated and she's accepting of coaching."

These attributes have helped Demeter emerge as one of the top high jumpers in the county.

The senior placed sixth in the Central Coast Section semifinals May 22 by jumping 5 feet, two inches. She also cleared this height May 6 in the SCVAL De Anza Division championships to finish in a tie for second.

"She's been very consistent at 5-2," Gutierrez said, "though she did make 5-4 at a meet early in the year."

Demeter plans to attend the University of California at Santa Cruz in the fall.

Garrett Cook - St. Francis baseball

His numbers are impressive, but Garrett Cook's value to the St. Francis High baseball team goes beyond hits, home runs and pitching victories.

"Garrett has had the best season of anyone at St. Francis," Lancers coach Chris Bradford said. "His leadership is worth his stats and more."

Cook, who last month was named MVP of the West Catholic Athletic League, has done it all for St. Francis.

The senior set two single-season school records this year: most hits (57) and most RBI (47). He hit .528 with eight homers and 14 doubles. And Cook needed just 108 at bats to reach these totals.

When he wasn't playing first base, Cook could be found on the mound, where he went 8-4.
