Rod Carpenter was appointed executive director of the Community Health Awareness Council on April 26. He brings more than 25 years of experience with nonprofit organizations to his position, along with a devotion to improving human services.

The organization provides mental health services in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, and Mountain View.

CHAC offering 52 counselors on 24 school campuses, supporting grades K-12. Counselors are available to deal with problems that may be causing stress within the family, including mental health, financial problems, domestic violence, substance abuse, and grief counseling, among other issues.

"CHAC came highly recommended to me, and I felt this was opportunity knocking," Carpenter said. "My entire career has been devoted to helping children and providing a chance where they can advance themselves mentally, physically and spiritually. When there is a strong program in place, then it's the executive director's responsibility to take it to the next level."

Carpenter's immediate goals are to expand conflict resolution and early intervention programs. Additional goals include expanding the drug and alcohol intervention programs in high schools, creating a higher community profile for CHAC services and increasing the donor base.

Mary Burkhardt, CHAC development director, welcomes Carpenter in his new position. "Rod's energy and breadth of vision are exactly what CHAC needs at this time," Burkhardt said. "I appreciate his approach to the way we have accomplished things, and he is filled with new ideas on how CHAC can grow."
