Underground

opens doors

The Los Altos Recreation Department's drop-in teen center, the Underground, will again be open this summer for students in grades 7-12 during the 1999-2000 school year.

A free barbecue for all interested students is scheduled for Saturday.

The Underground is located in the basement of the Garden House at Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos. The facility has pool and ping-pong tables, a big-screen TV, and food and drinks for purchase. The Underground is supervised by city recreation staff.

The Recreation Department also is offering a two-night camping trip to Manteca Waterslides and Oakwood Lake. The cost of the trip is $75.

Hidden Villa

closed to general public

Hidden Villa, a 1,600-acre environmental education camp and wilderness preserve in Los Altos Hills, will be closed to the general public June 21 through Aug. 21 while its summer camp program is in session.

The preserve, located on Moody Road, will be open on select weekends during the summer for guided farm tours and use of hiking trails.

The following dates will be open to the public: July 3-4, July 17-18, July 24-25 and Aug. 7-8.

Covington pool party

open to community

The S.P.L.A.S.H. group invites the community to kick off the summer with a pool party from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Covington Pool, 201 Covington Road.

The party will include free swimming and free barbecue by Clarke's Charcoal Broiler.

The event is hosted by the Los Altos Masters swim group; S.P.L.A.S.H.; Swimmers Promoting Los Altos Aquatics, Safety and Health; in cooperation with the city of Los Altos.

Organizers will be sharing plans for a new community aquatic center, as this will be the last summer at the Covington Pool.

The site will be closing because of renovation of the Covington School.

picnic on tap

Newcomers to Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View are welcome to join the Alto-View Newcomers, which is holding a family picnic 12:30 p.m., Sunday, at McKenzie Park in Los Altos.

Los Altos Masons

award scholarship

The Los Altos Masonic Lodge awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Mike J. Friedman during Senior Recognition Night, May 25, at Los Altos High School.

Members said the scholarship is offered to a deserving graduating senior who plans to attend college and major in education.
