No one was arrested in Los Altos for DUI during the Memorial Day-weekend crackdown on drunk driving.

But local officers did cite 20 during the May 29 Los Altos checkpoint: 12 for seat-belt violations and eight for license violations, said Los Altos Sgt. Tom Connelly.

One person was arrested on an outstanding warrant for DUI, Connelly said.

"Two folks went through the field sobriety tests, and they passed," Connelly said.

At a checkpoint in Campbell, police arrested a drunk passenger, said Jan Ford, spokeswoman for the "Avoid the 13" campaign. While the driver was undergoing a sobriety test, the passenger climbed out of the car, and "got abusive with an officer and shoved him," Ford said. The female passenger was arrested on charges of being drunk in public.

This is the first year county law enforcement agencies have held an "Avoid the 13" campaign over the Memorial weekend, so there are no numbers to compare with previous years.

Memorial Day ranks second behind Labor Day in alcohol-related accidents and third behind Labor Day and New Year's Eve for alcohol-related deaths, Ford said.

The campaign began more than 20 years ago when the 13 law enforcement agencies in Santa Clara County banded together to crack down on drunk driving over the New Year's holiday.

The program has grown to include Labor Day, as well, and now Memorial Day. San Mateo County has developed an "Avoid the 23" program and Alameda County has an "Avoid the 21" effort.

In the three-county weekend focus, an even 7,000 drivers passed through 10 checkpoints. Police made 18 arrests and towed 51 cars whose drivers were either drunk, driving with no license, or driving with a suspended license, Ford said.

The next "Avoid the 13" campaign will be over the Labor Day weekend, from Sept. 3 to 6.
