Why term limits policy is needed

I have been sponsoring an action to put term limits for city council on the November ballot. I am sure that almost all persons, upon hearing this, have the following question: since our present policy has worked without any problems for over 20 years, why try to fix something that isn't broken?

Our present term limit policy is unenforceable. When it was established, the number of terms served by an incumbent could not be limited by law. That has since changed and limits can now be set by law, as long as the voters approve the law.

All prior city council members have honored our term limit policy, as will our current council. But we can all imagine that someday someone will run for a third term to let the voters decide whether the continued service of the incumbent is more important than the policy. This could be a divisive issue for the city.

As long as a deficiency can be easily corrected, good management will act to avoid problems rather than waiting for something to "break". It is an easy task to turn this term limit policy into a law which will save our city from future problems.

We would like to thank everyone in the community who helped make the Los Altos High School AIDS walk-run a success. With a list of thing to do that kept growing, we appreciated all the help we could get. We would like to thank the Los Altos Police Department for their cooperation. Also, thank you to the many businesses and merchants who made both monetary and prize donations. Your contributions helped make the event possible. Lastly, a big thanks to all of the participants who came and joined us. Your support makes a difference in the fight against AIDS. We hope to see you again next year.
