Graduation roundup: Local high school seniors recognized

Los Altos High

Dressed in blue caps and gowns, Los Altos High seniors sat together one last time as a class June 9 for their graduation ceremony held on the school's football field.

Prinicpal David Brazer spoke about school safety, in the wake of the high school schooting in Colorado earlier this year.

"A generation ago, when I was sitting with the Class of 1975 waiting, as you are, to receive my diploma, the major threat to our safety appeared to be the Soviet Union . . . ," Brazer said. "Today, Americans seem to be more threatened by one another, rather than some evil outside force . . . But I know from my years spent at Los Altos High School that there are so many of you in this class who have proven over and over again that there are many things large and small that you can and will do. You have already made our school community a better place; a place that is safe and welcoming for all of us."

Lisa Beard and Pete Bjorklund won the school's Eagle Award for overall achivement. Katie Tuttle and Scott Burger earned the Paul S. Sakamoto Community Service Award for contributing more than 750 hours each over the past four years to community service projects.

The following 11 students earned perfect cumulative grade point averages: Julia Bobrovich, Andrew Hill, Ognen Stojanovski, Danny Vorhaus, Aaron Staple, Lisa Beard, Ryan Brown, Mike Friedman, Emily Hagenmaier, David Kaplan and Paul Ruvolo.

Students continued their graduation celebration at Players in Belmont, where parents organized the school's annual Grade Nite celebration. This year's theme was "The 2oth Century Remembered."

This was the first year since parents first launched the alcohol-free event that the celebration has been held off campus.

Mountain View High

Mountain View High School's graduating Class of '99 peformed a well-orchestrated ceremony June 10 on the school's football field that ended with the formation of a giant circle around the school's flag pole.

Seniors Michelle Yu and Michelle Law, who referred to their class as "Generation.com," spoke about growing up in the computer era - comparing the effects of long-term computer use to drugs. They spoke of the importance of computers, but warned classmates not to get "hooked" on them.

Mary Allison Pitts and Michelle Annette Yu were named valedictorians.

Local seniors tossed their caps this month, marking the end of their high school education. Below is a roundup of local ceremonies and graduates.

The following Los Altos and Los Altos Hills students were among the 37 seniors to graduate May 29 from Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley: Miles David Osborn and Jennifer Elizabeth Boldrey of Los Altos Hills and Michelle Rae Floyd of Los Altos. Osborn plans to attend UC Davic; Boldrey plans to attend the University of Arizona and Floyd plans to attend Whittier College.
