Elayne Dauber became mayor of Los Altos Hills at the City Council meeting June 17. Each year one of the five City Council members is chosen to be mayor. She follows Bob Johnson, who had been appointed to three terms.

"We are eternally grateful for the wonderful job that you have done," Dauber told Johnson as she presented him with a plaque. Dauber commended Johnson's tact and work over the past years.

Jim Steiner, resident of Wild Plum Lane, said Johnson was able to "generate a team spirit and be fair to both sides." He added, "This was a very difficult year in which to be mayor...I think the town owes you a great deal of gratitude."

"I was very proud a year ago to be appointed to my third term as mayor," Johnson said. He and his wife are taking a trip to Europe in August to relax.

The council and staff adjusted to the mayor change throughout the meeting. The council laughed when Dauber was accidentally called "Council member Dauber" instead of "Mayor." Johnson said, "That happened about three minutes ago!"

Later in the meeting, Johnson asked if his people could hear him well enough. "You're not all looking up with interest," he said. "You're not mayor any more!" someone chided back.
