Host families needed for students

The World Heritage International Student Exchange Program needs families to host high school exchange students from Spain, Mexico, France, Germany, Great Britain, Thailand, Japan or the former Soviet Union for the 1999-2000 school year.

Students will arrive from their home country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year.

Students are screened and selected based on academic performance, English proficiency, teacher recommendations and personal interviews.

Host families are required to provide students room, board and guidance.

County faces teacher shortage

The Santa Clara County Office of Education needs special education, alternative school and Head Start teachers to staff classroom sites throughout the Peninsula.

Special education classes assist students up to age 22 who are severely handicapped, autistic or emotionally disturbed. Alternative school classes serve at-risk students in grades 7-12. Candidates for these positions need a bachelor's degree and a CBEST certificate.

Head Start classes serve low-income, pre-school students. Teaching assistants should have completed at least six Early Childhood Education units. Bilingual skills are a plus.
