No more than 12 percent of the graduating class may be inducted.Xander Evenhuis was named to the dean's list for 1999 spring semester at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz. Evenhuis is a 1998 graduate of Los Altos High School studying aeronautical science. Gregory Scott Mitchell of Los Altos was among the 37 students recently initiated into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society at Duke University. He is studying biology. Robin Casey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Casey of Los Altos, was elected to the honor society at Skidmore College this Spring and was a recipient of the Seymour J. Goldman Memorial Prize for her outstanding work in the school's business department. Katharine E. Stober, daughter of Victoria A. and J.L. Emmons, formerly of Los Altos, and Daniel R. Stober and Joan Mendelson, is among the 700 students accepted to attend Colgate University in August. Stober is a 1999 graduate of Castilleja School, where she played varsity volleyball and earned CCS All-League honors. She was a National Merit Semi-Finalist. Elizabeth Antoinette Papagni, a 1994 graduate of Los Altos High School, was recently admitted to the Harvard Graduate School of Psychology. She graduated from Simmons College in Boston. Michael Austin, son of Dennis R. and Janet A. Austin of Los Altos, recently appeared in the Whitman College production of "SubUrbia." He is a 1996 graduate of Mountain View High School. Egan Intermediate School teachers Marjorie Gray, Jeanette Keon and Shannon McLaughlin were among the 20,000 science teachers and educational leaders to attend the National Science Teachers Association National Convention recently, where astronaut John Glenn and Richard Riley spoke. College Graduates Paul A. Sinclair, a 1989 Los Altos High School graduate, received his M.B.A from the Stanford Graduate School of Business on June 13. Prior to attending Stanford, Sinclair spent three years in the Investment Banking department of Merrill Lynch in both New York and Sydney, Australia. Sinclair graduated Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1994 with a bachelor's in Business Economics. Sinclair will join the Investment Services Group of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in San Francisco. Sinclair is the son of Carol and Gerry Sinclair of Los Altos. Scott Yewell, a 1994 Los Altos High School graduate, earned his Master's in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University May 30. He accepted a position as a DSP design engineer with Boston Acoustics in Peabody, Mass. Sheryl Ann Kalbach received her master's degree in Social Work from Simmons College in Boston during the 94th annual commencement May 16. Kalbach is the daughter of Gary and Sherron Kalbach of Los Altos. She plans to work at Children's Hospital this summer. Los Altos residents Joseph P. Newman and Daniel Richard Thompson and Mountain View resident Dana Catherine Erickson graduated June 13 from Oregon State University. Newman received his master's in Forest Resources; Thompson received his bachelor's in Business Administration; and Erickson received her master's in Geography. Lyssa Krystal Jordan of Los Altos was a member of the first class to graduate from the California State University, Monterey Bay, May 22. She received a bachelor's in Visual and Public Art. Patrick Kenneth Quaid, son of Richard and Karen Quaid of Mountain View, was among the 481 students to graduate May 21 from Luther College in Iowa. Quaid earned a bachelor's in Psychology. He served as vice president of the Luther College Congregation Council for the 1998-99 academic year. Eamon Briggs, son of Jonathan and Dionys Briggs of Los Altos Hills, graduated May 23 from Colby College in Maine with the following honors: Distinction in major, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa honor society. A graduate of Henry Gunn High School, Briggs earned a bachelor's degree in physics. Los Altos residents Nicholas E. Osborn, Joshua E. Goines and Stacey L. Fong graduated May 17 from Claremont McKenna College. Osborn, the son of Linda and Stephen Osborn, earned a bachelor's degree in economics and accounting. Goines, the son of Lee and William Goines, graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in economics and Spanish. Fong, the daughter of Linda and Vincent Fong, earned a bachelor's in government and Spanish. Kris Hansen, daughter of Arthur and Mary Hansen of Los Altos, graduated Summa Cum Laude May 15 from Dominican College. She received a bachelor's degree in Biology and chemistry. Hansen won Outstanding Biology Student award and honors for outstanding thesis. A graduate of St. Francis High School, Hansen plans to continue her studies at the University of California, Davis. Laurel Diane Bestock, daughter of Ralph and Donna Bestock of Los Altos, received a bachelor's degree in Egyptology and Old World Archaeology and Art magna cum laude May 31 from Brown University. She earned special academic honors and graduated as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Jeffrey Eric Nord, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Nord of Los Altos, received a bachelor's degree in engineering May 31 from Brown University. He graduated as a member of the Tau Beta Pi honorary society. He was selected for All-Ivy Academic Honors for the winter sports season. Dean's List/Awards Kousuke Anan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Taiken Anan of Los Altos, made the dean's list at Washington University in St. Louis recently for his academic achievement during fall 1998. Julie Lynn Collinson and Judd Golladay Stiff III, both of Los Altos, and Gina Marie Biegel of Mountain View, were recently named to the dean's honor list for earning grade point averages of 3.75 or higher during winter quarter. Catherine Cabot, daughter of Mathew A. and Christine H Cabot of Los Altos, and Catherine Barnes, daughter of John and Carolyn Barnes of Los Altos, recently earned Academic Distinction for the 1998 fall semester at Whitman College by earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The Los Altos Masonic Lodge awarded Mike J. Friedman a $1,000.00 scholarship May 25 during the Senior Recognition Night at Los Altos High School. Friedman plans to study elementary education at the University of California, San Diego. The scholarship is awarded to students who show outstanding high school performance and who plan to study education.
