Don't hesitate to prune during summer months

Even though the weather is hot, you can still prune trees and large shrubs in the summertime, advises the National Arbor Day Foundation. This is the time to control and direct branch growth by trimming entire branches you don't want or by just cutting them back and thus slowing or "dwarfing" the size of the tree. The reason for the slowing effect is that you reduce the total leaf surface, thereby reducing the amount of food manufactured and sent to the roots for their development and next year's growth of the crown.
