Free compost class In Los Altos

The Home Composting Education Program for Santa Clara County, in coordination with Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, is sponsoring a "Composting Basics" workshop. The workshop is free of charge to everyone from 10 a.m. to noon, July 10, at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

The class will learn how to transform ordinary yard waste into a super soil conditioner, how to process food scraps into free plant fertilizer, and how to recycle grass clippings.

History House docent training

The Los Altos History House Museum will offer training for prospective docents from 1-3 p.m. or 3-5 p.m., July 7, at the museum, located behind the Los Altos Library at 52 S. San Antonio Road.

Docents are needed to conduct tours of the 1930s-era museum, among other activities. For more information, call 948-9427 or 941-0950, ext. 126.

Summer homes for exchange students

The International Educational Program (IEP) at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills needs help finding summer host homes for university students from foreign lands.

The IEP sponsors work visas for approximately 180 international college-aged interns. Incoming participants work throughout the Bay Area and stay with single or family hosts.

Hosts are paid $500 a month, and all students are said to be mature and speak more than one language.

Bastille Day celebration

Neighbors Abroad of Palo Alto and its sister organization in Albi, France will host a celebration of Bastille Day 7-11 p.m., July 11, at the Cubberley Community Center Auditorium, located at 4000 Middlefield Road, in Palo Alto.

The event includes French foods and wines, dancing, accordion music, sketch artists and singing.

Cost is $12 for adults, $5 for youth and free for children 7 and under. For more information, call 949-0757 or 326-8885.

Underground opens doors

The Los Altos Recreation Department's drop-in teen center, the Underground, will again be open this summer for students in grades 7-12 during the 1999-2000 school year.

The Underground is located in the basement of the Garden House at Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos. The facility has pool and ping-pong tables, a big screen TV, and food and drinks for purchase. The Underground is supervised by city recreation staff.

The Recreation Department also is offering a two-night camping trip July 16-18 to Manteca Waterslides and Oakwood Lake. The cost of the trip is $75.

Hidden Villa closed for camps

Hidden Villa, a 1,600-acre environmental education camp and wilderness preserve in Los Altos Hills, will be closed to the general public through Aug. 21 while its summer camp program is in session.

The preserve, located on Moody Road, will be open on select weekends during the summer for guided farm tours and use of hiking trails.

The following dates will be open to the public: July 3-4, July 17-18, July 24-25 and Aug. 7-8.

Donate your car to American Red Cross

The American Red Cross in Palo Alto, has initiated a vehicle donation program to generate funds for disaster preparedness and health and safety services in the community.

The Red Cross is accepting contributions of new and used, running or not, automobiles, small pick-up trucks and sport utility vehicles. A free and convenient pickup will be arranged and a tax-deductible contribution will benefit the donor, as well as the Red Cross.

To donate a vehicle to your local Red Cross, call the Palo Alto chapter at 688-0415.

Sponsors needed for Los Altos tree lighting

The Los Altos Village Association is asking residents and businesses to help support the cost of providing street decorations and twinkle lights that adorn many of the trees in downtown Los Altos and provide a festive ambiance during the month of December.

The association started this annual project in 1957 to create a festive atmosphere and will continue with the project with the help of friends. Request are for help to finance the cost of strings, decorations and labor to install and remove the lights.

Kathleen Byrne, executive director, said $12,000 is needed to accomplish the project. She said $9,000 will be used for repairs, installation and removal of the lights, and $3,000 is necessary to pay for new strings of lights.
