Foundation surveying 'serious' needs in LA

The Los Altos Community Foundation has developed a questionnaire to determine resident needs in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. The questionnaire has been hand-delivered to 430 randomly-selected households. Only 250 responses have been received thus far, according to organizers.

"We want to know what the serious needs of the community are compared to previous surveys," said Roy Lave, a Community Foundation member. "However, we suspect that the persons who did not complete the question represent a silent middle majority who do not have strong feelings for or against what is happening in the community."

The questionnaire provided space for individualized answers. Review of the input indicated residents considered the following items necessary: affordable housing, smart traffic lights, upgraded public school facilities, an expanded library, handicapped- and stroller-friendly curbs on Main Street, and a dog park.

Other responses indicated a concern with keeping the city's downtown small and charming and without parking structures. Suggestions included competitive cable companies and an investigation of academic issues at high schools. One respondent complained that Los Altos and Los Altos Hills have too many civic programs.

Once the data is organized, the results will be entered on the Web for publication.
