Meet the coach

Jim Brewer, assistant basketball coach for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, will speak at a seminar titled "Winning Strategies in Sports" at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the Church of Scientology, 3505 El Camino Real, Palo Alto. Seminar topics include how to win championships, how to turn around a losing season and how to prepare for the off season. Brewer played in the NBA for 10 years and has worked as a coach, scout and in management the past 10 years. Admission is $11. For reservations and more information, call 424-1990.

Lively crew

Former Los Altos resident Bebe Bryans, women's crew coach at Michigan State, guided her team to the NCAA Championships last month in Sacramento. The Spartans' varsity placed fourth in the 8+ Petite final and the junior varsity took sixth in the 8+ final. Bryans, a 1975 Los Altos High graduate, is in her second year as Michigan State coach.

Marquess honored

Stanford University baseball coach Mark Marquess, a Mountain View resident, has been named Pacific-10 Coach of the Year for the eighth time. Marquess this season led the Cardinal to the College World Series, where his team was eliminated by Florida State.
