The Los Altos Hills Twins went into this week needing one win to reach the finals of the District 44 Minor Tournament of Champions.

The Twins were scheduled to play either Santa Clara Westside or Sunnyvale Southern in Monday night's semifinal round. The winner moved on to today's title game, set for 5:30 p.m. at Cupertino Junior High.

The Twins reached the semis by winning a pair of games last week. They defeated Moreland 7-4 June 22 and then beat Briarwood 13-7 last Thursday.

Eric Johnson hit a three-run homer against Moreland, while Andrew Geenan and Alex Knott both went 2-for-3.

Ryan Guslani was 3-for-3 in the Moreland game and 3-for-4 against Briarwood. George Still was 3-for-3 vs. Briarwood.

Defensively, Johnson and Ryan Mannes each pitched three strong innings in both games. And Mark Simmons made some stellar plays in the field, according to coach Larry Guslani.

"This season's been a lot of fun," coach Guslani said. "This is a great group of kids."

In Major action, the Los Altos/Los Altos Hills Braves fell 4-3 to the Sunnyvale Serra Mets June 23 in an opening round TOC game at Mountain View's McKelvey Field.

The Braves got off to a fast start, getting a first-inning home run from Matt Long. They added two more runs in the second for a 3-0 lead.

The Mets battled back in the fourth, scoring three runs off Long to tie it up. They added another run in the fifth, which proved to be the game winner.

The Braves had a chance to tie things up in the sixth and final inning, but they could not drive in Bo Thede from third base.

The Braves had six hits in the game, two for extra bases: Long's homer and Jimmy Sandman's double. The team also made some outstanding defensive plays, including a double play started by shortstop Richard Gorman.

The Mountain View Giants also lost their Major TOC opener. Sunnyvale Metro dropped the Giants 10-0 Thursday at Cupertino's Kennedy Junior High.
