Los Altos Police offer child safety event

The Los Altos Police Department will conduct a child safety restraint event during the Los Altos Arts & Wine Festival between noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday in the rear parking lot of the police department, 1 N. San Antonio Road.

The officers will inspect vehicles with child safety seats. The event is to educate the public on the proper use of restraint devices for adults and children and will include air-bag safety information. Safety brochures will also be available. Inspections will be offered on a first-come first-served basis. For more information, call Officer Matt Hartley, 948-8223.

Senator Sher at Los Altos festival

State Senator Byron Sher, representing the Los Altos district, will be at the Los Altos Arts & Wine Festival beginning 10 a.m., Saturday, to answer questions. He will be at the Peninsula Democratic Coalition's voter registration booth.

Free compost class In Los Altos

The Home Composting Education Program for Santa Clara County, in coordination with Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, is sponsoring a "Composting Basics" workshop.

The workshop, free of charge, is from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

The class will learn how to transform ordinary yard waste into a super soil conditioner, how to process food scraps into free plant fertilizer, and how to recycle grass clippings.

Family rummage sale at school

The Los Altos Parent Preschool is preparing a 40-family rummage sale to help raise funds for the school's new play yard.

The rummage sale will be held beginning at 8 a.m., July 17, in the preschool parking lot, 199 Almond Ave., Los Altos. For more information, call 947-9371.

History House docent training

The Los Altos History House Museum will offer training for prospective docents from 1-3 p.m. or 3-5 p.m., today, at the museum, located behind the Los Altos Library at 52 S. San Antonio Road.

Summer homes for exchange students

The International Educational Program (IEP) at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills needs help finding summer host homes for university students from foreign lands.

The IEP sponsors work visas for approximately 180 international college-age interns. Incoming participants work throughout the Bay Area and stay with single or family hosts.

Hosts are paid $500 a month, and all students are said to be mature and speak more than one language.

Bastille Day celebration

Neighbors Abroad of Palo Alto and its sister organization in Albi, France, will host a celebration of Bastille Day 7-11 p.m., Sunday, at the Cubberley Community Center Auditorium, located at 4000 Middlefield Road, in Palo Alto.

The event includes French foods and wines, dancing, accordion music, sketch artists and singing.

Underground opens doors

The Los Altos Recreation Department's drop-in teen center, the Underground, will again be open this summer for students in grades 7-12 during the 1999-2000 school year.

The Underground is located in the basement of the Garden House at Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos.

The facility has pool and pingpong tables, a big-screen TV, and food and drinks for purchase. The Underground is supervised by city recreation staff.

The Recreation Department also is offering a two-night camping trip July 16-18 to Manteca Waterslides and Oakwood Lake.

The cost of the trip is $75.
