Town Crier Staff Writer The mowed grass and teak benches beckon. In one corner redwoods and Monterey pines shelter 30 camellia, rhododendron and azalea plants donated by the Peninsula Camellia Society. In another, walkways wind across meadow-grass berms. The only thing missing from the newly built .5-acre city park at the corner of Edith Avenue and San Antonio Road in downtown Los Altos are the people. "People already want to have their functions here," said Brian McCarthy, public works supervisor with the city of Los Altos. But in spite of its appearance, the park isn't ready to open because there are still some issues to be worked out with the contractor. Then there is a 90-day maintenance period before the park can be used. At a meeting June 30, McCarthy met in the park with the contractors. They were to meet again last Friday and possibly begin a 90-day maintenance period. During the summer, a subcommittee of the parks and recreation commission will review the more than 100 suggestions submitted for a park name. "Some were not appropriate, some were frivolous and some very interesting," said Marge Anderson, a member of the parks and recreation commission and chairwoman of the subcommittee reviewing park names. She said the subcommittee would have 15 names, plus or minus, to submit to the parks and recreation commission at its July 21 meeting. The commission's recommendation will then go to the city council for approval. City officials said they expect to schedule a park opening and dedication sometime in September. |
