They went to Disneyland. The team was honored at the Magic Kingdom Sunday for its magical shootout win over China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The United States, which lost two of its previous three games against the Chinese, won 5-4 on penalty kicks to break a scoreless tie. United States goalkeeper Briana Scurry made the only save of the overtime shootout, stopping China's third penalty kick. Brandi Chastain of San Jose made the fifth and deciding penalty kick for Team USA. Chastain's shot into the lower corner of the net drew a rousing response from the 90,185 fans filling the Rose Bowl, the largest crowd to ever attend a women's sporting event. The United States went 6-0 in the World Cup tournament and out-scored its opponents by an 18-3 margin. Fair, a defender, did not play in the championship game but did see action in four other games. At 20 years old, Fair was the youngest member of the team. Cannon, Clash fall short Los Altos Hills resident Joe Cannon made seven saves in goal last Thursday in the San Jose Clash's 2-1 loss to the host Tampa Bay Mutiny. The setback dropped the Clash's Major League Soccer record to 10-8. Cannon came up with two stellar saves in the second half, punching away a header off a corner kick in the 63rd minute and then making a diving save at the feet of a Mutiny player in the 79th minute. Ambassadors lose two The Silicon Valley Ambassadors' weekend trip to Los Angeles was not a pleasant one. The locally based men's minor league team lost both its games. The Ambassadors fell 4-2 to the Los Angeles Fireballs on Saturday and then were routed 7-0 by the San Fernando Valley Heroes on Sunday. The losses sunk the Ambassadors to 4-6 in the Premier Development League and 7-8 overall. |
