The Los Altos Major All-Star Team won its second game of the District 44 tournament last Saturday, routing Sunnyvale Serra 19-1 at McKelvey Park in Mountain View.

Los Altos, a team of 11- and 12-year-olds, won with a lethal combination of strong pitching and power hitting.

Richard Gorman earned the win, pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. Matt Long pitched one inning, allowing one run and two hits.

The Los Altos offense tallied eight home runs in the game. Four of the homers came on consecutive at-bats by Gorman, Michael Peterson, Chris Coleman and Skate Gorham.

Before it was all over, Coleman and Peterson hit two homers apiece. Also clearing the fence were Long and Alex Galli, who smacked the ball approximately 250 feet.

The game was called after four innings on the 10-run rule.

With the win, Los Altos remained in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tourney and played yesterday at Tri-cities field in Cupertino.

Los Altos won its first game July 7, a 9-0 decision over Sunnyvale Southern at McKelvey.

Los Altos again won with pitching and power.

Long pitched a complete game shutout and surrendered just four hits.

Long also helped his cause by hitting a home run in the first inning. Gorman followed with a homer of his own.

Before the game was over, Los Altos would smack two more homers - both by Ryan Gualtieri.

Other base hits came from Galli, Coleman, Chris Chown and Peterson.

Outstanding defensive plays were made by Ryan Stanley, Gorham, Collin Felch, George Thabbit, Brent Booth, Gualtieri and Gorman.

Los Altos No. 1 opened the 9- and 10-year-old tournament with a 6-5 win over Santa Clara Briarwood last Thursday at McKelvey Park.

Los Altos tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Kellen McColl.

In the bottom of the seventh, J.P. Marshall led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a throwing error. With Mike VonBrockhurst at the plate, Santa Clara's Chris Johnston threw another wild pitch, allowing Marshall to score the winning run.

VonBrockhurst went 1-for-3 in the game and drove in two runs.
