The event features 10 local art galleries, antique shops and other stores. Several galleries are hosting painting, sculpture and other exhibits. Fastframe, located at 371 State St., is showing Robert Perkins and his oil paintings which are done in the romantic realism style. ZYT Galerie at 923 N. San Antonio Road is featuring oil painter Michael Wood. Kathleen McKittrick, a bookmaking artist and instructor, will demonstrate binding and sewing techniques at William Marcus at 390 State St. There are also events for children. Lin's Toy Cupboard at 170 State St., will feature "Fun with Wax," while Linden Tree Children's Books and Records, 170 State St., is holding hands-on origami demonstrations. For more information, call 948-1455. Filmmaker visits Democratic Coalition Filmmaker Michael J. Moore will be showing and discussing his latest film, "The Legacy: Murder and Media, Politics and Prisons," at the July meeting of the Peninsula Democratic Coalition. The film considers a pair of personal tragedies, including the kidnapping and murder of Polly Klass, along with politicians and radio stations that helped California land its "three strikes" law. The movie and discussion will begin at 7 p.m., July 22, at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. The event is open to the public; reservations are not required. Summer homes for exchange students The International Educational Program at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills needs help finding summer host homes for university students from foreign lands. The IEP sponsors work visas for approximately 180 international college-age interns. Incoming participants work throughout the Bay Area and stay with single or family hosts. Hosts are paid $500 a month, and all students are said to be mature and speak more than one language. For more information on IEP, call Dana Schwartz at 949-7049. Underground opens doors The Los Altos Recreation Department's drop-in teen center, the Underground, will again be open this summer for students in grades 7-12 during the 1999-2000 school year. The Underground is located in the basement of the Garden House at Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos. The facility has pool and pingpong tables, a big-screen TV, and food and drinks for purchase. The Underground is supervised by city recreation staff. For more information, call 941-0950. Hidden Villa closed for camps Hidden Villa, a 1,600-acre environmental education camp and wilderness preserve in Los Altos Hills, will be closed to the general public through Aug. 21 while its summer camp program is in session. The preserve, located on Moody Road, will be open on select weekends during the summer for guided farm tours and use of hiking trails. The following dates will be open to the public: July 17-18, July 24-25 and Aug. 7-8. For more information, call 949-8650. |
