This Dec. 31 the Los Altos Millennium Celebration will offer something special to the smallest party animals. This New Year's Eve, kids ages 5-12 whose parents are attending the formal dinner portion of the Los Altos millennium event will be able to buy tickets to a Children's Millennium Overnight at Redwood Grove.

The idea for the New Year's Eve slumber party belongs to Keith and Susan Gutierrez. Keith has been the director at Redwood Grove for the past seven years. Hardly a kid or parent in Los Altos has not crossed his path during either a summer program or a school field trip. Keith remembers, "Susan saw the Millennium Celebration fliers around town, and we started talking about what we were going to do that night. We saw a need and decided to offer to run a kids' overnight program so parents could really relax and celebrate."

The kids will be invited to arrive as early as 6 p.m., for an evening of games, videos, crafts and a live-animal visit from a menagerie of creeping and crawling creatures. The kids need to bring their own dinners as well as a sleeping bag. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Most of the activities, including sleeping, will take place in the Redwood Grove Nature Center. However, Keith has not ruled out a surprise or two outside, weather permitting. An old-fashioned campfire inside the center will help the children wind down from an action-packed evening. Pick up time the morning of Jan. 1, 2000, is 8 a.m.

The cost for the Millennium overnight is $140 per child and $60 per sibling. Space is limited with only 35 reservations available for full millennium ticket holders.

There will be an open house to more fully describe the evening to parents who are interested at 1 p.m., Sept. 19, at a site yet to be determined.

For more information about the program or reservations, parents may call Keith or Susan Gutierrez at 917-0342.

The Los Altos Millennium Celebration includes a sit-down dinner for 1,000 people in an elaborate tent setting, entertainment, dancing and a midnight surprise.
