A Los Altos teen died and three passengers were injured in a head-on auto accident about 6 p.m., on July 7.

Erin Maruyama, 17, was killed instantly when the 1988 Honda Accord she was driving north on Highway 25 near Hollister drifted across the two-lane road and struck a southbound car, said Adam Rodriguez, public affairs officer with the California Highway Patrol.

Erin's passengers included Jenica Hong, 18, of Los Altos; Andy Lu, 18, of Mountain View; and Cheryl Seid, 17, of Fremont.

Brian Grady St. Clair, 43, of Hollister, was driving a 1998 Mercury Marquis when he was struck by Erin's car.

Officials said that Erin may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Jenica, Andy, Cheryl and St. Clair were air-lifted to area hospitals, officials said.

As of Monday, Jenica remained in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman at San Jose Medical Center. Andy was discharged on Saturday. Cheryl's and St. Clair's conditions were not known.

Erin, Jenica and Andy graduated from Los Altos High School in June.

"The scariest thing," said Serena Chang, a junior at Los Altos High School, "is that they were off to college and everything was going well for them."

Witnesses to the accident include Megan Nakamoto, 18, and Sonia Valdez, 18, also of Los Altos, officials said. They were not involved in the accident and were not passengers in Erin's car, Rodriguez said.
