Earling M. Strom, a former longtime resident of Los Altos, died June 11 at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. A native of Minnesota, he was 70.
Mr. Strom worked as a mail carrier for the Los Altos post office in the 1950s. He later worked in the electronics industry as a design engineer for Westinghouse.
Mr. Strom enjoyed softball, music and reading.
He is survived by his companion, Marjorie Street; children, Judy Powers and David Strom; siblings, Leonard Strom and Gladys Waterbury; six grandchildren; and one-great grandchild.
Clarence O. Spears
Clarence O. Spears died July 1. He served as a volunteer firefighter for the city of Mountain View from 1942-1963.
He is survived by his children, Bill Spears of Los Altos and Betty Cooper; siblings, Lee, Dean, Wayne and Gordon Spears and Neva Clemence; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 7 p.m., July 22 at the Community Bible Church of Mountain View, 2050 Miramonte Ave., Mountain View.
Emily Wilgus
Emily Wilgus died June 16 in Los Altos. A native of California, she was 90.
Mrs. Wilgus was an executive secretary with the Franchise Tax Board.
She is survived by her son, Bill Bassett of Los Altos; siblings, George and William Elkouri; and three grandchildren.
Alvin Frederick Geselschap
Alvin Frederick Geselschap, a longtime research analyst and techinical writer for Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation, died June 17. A native of Iowa, he was 73.
Mr. Geselschap was a graduate of Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English and journalism. He also received a degree in law from the Alexander Hamilton Institute. He served in the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean War.
He was a lifelong student of the American Civil War, Mark Twain, trains and weaponry of all kinds.
Mr. Geselschap is survived by his wife, Jeanne Hutchison Geselschap; one child, Barbara Jeanne Jaarsma; grandchildren, Robert Curtis Wilbur, Brent Paul Wilbur and Alexandra Whitney Jaarsma; one sibling, Carol Moren; and his mother, Vella Geselschap Idle.
Joyce Takako Yoneda
Joyce Takako Yoneda died June 22. A native of Idaho, she was 56.
Mrs. Takako was an avid country western dancer and world traveler, and she was devoted to golden retrievers.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Gary Yoneda; child, Miyeko Yoneda; siblings, Ron Hamamoto and Janice Morimoto; and her mother, Mitsuko Hamamoto.
Services were held July 1 at the Mountain View Buddhist Temple.
Billy Joe Haynes
Billy Joe Haynes died June 21 in Mountain View. A native of Oklahoma, he was 62.
Mr. Haynes was an electrical engineer with Westinghouse.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Haynes of Los Altos; son, Max Haynes; siblings, Jimmy, Ada Lee and Tom Haynes and Phyllis McClintic.
Services were held in Oklahoma.
Ruth C. Lindquist
Ruth C. Lindquist died June 23. A native of Washington, she was 92.
Mrs. Lindquist attended San Francisco State College prior to embarking on her teaching career in 1927. She taught as a kindergarten teacher at Manzanita School for 25 years. She retired from the Oakland Public Schools in 1970.
She was the widow of H. Fred Lindquist, who died in 1954. She is survived by two sons, Paul and Norman Lindquist; four grandchildren, Kristin Branan, Dana Lindquist, Roald Lindquist and Cristina Heffernan; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Joseph Granquist.
A memorial service was held June 27 at Pilgrim Haven Retirement Home in Los Altos.
Celia Lyles-Ruiz
Celia Lyles-Ruiz, a longtime resident of Mountain View, died June 29. She was 85.
Mrs. Lyles-Ruiz and her husband Manuel established the La Paloma restaurant on the former Bailey Avenue when then first arrived in Mountain View in the early 1940s. Subsequently, they operated the Whisman Grocery, serving their neighborhood unitl 1968.
Mrs. Lyles-Ruiz was predeceased by her husband, Manuel Ruiz and children Elivira Chavez and Robert Lyles. She is survived by children, Dora Ruiz Davila; siblings, Alfonso Lyles, Corrine Lyles Dominguez, Roseann Armijo, Carmen Lyles Dominguez, Betsy Cortinas and Alice Morris.
Graveside services were held July 6 at Alta Mesa Memorial Park.
