Groundbreaking at Hidden Villa

Officials at Hidden Villa, an environmental preserve in Los Altos Hills, will celebrate groundbreaking on a new 3,300-square-foot "Education Center" at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 8. The center will demonstrate sustainable building principles.

The event is free and will feature a tour of the building site, as well as a presentation on sustainable building by center architects, the San Luis Sustainability Group.

Refreshments will be served and visitors are invited to bring a picnic supper.

Entertainment will be provided by Jack Tuttle and Friends, a bluegrass group.

Reservations are due by Aug. 3. Call 949-8650.

Chefs Who Care at Mac's American Grill

The Chefs Who Care program continues with two evenings at Mac's American Grill, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Aug. 9 and 10. Mac's is located at 325 Main St., Los Altos.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Community Services Agency of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View, which provides services to needy individuals.

The cost of the dinner is $18 in advance, $20 at the door. Half the dinner cost will go to the agency.

To make reservations, call 961-3584. Entree choices are veal cannelloni, Pacific red snapper or champagne chicken.

Summer homes for exchange students

The International Educational Program (IEP) at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills needs help finding summer host homes for university students from foreign lands.

The IEP sponsors work visas for approximately 180 international college-aged interns. Incoming participants work throughout the Bay Area and stay with single or family hosts.

Hosts are paid $500 a month, and all students are said to be mature and can speak more than one language.

Filmmaker talks to demos

Filmmaker Michael J. Moore will show and discuss his latest film, "The Legacy: Murder and Media, Politics and Prisions," at the July meeting of the Peninsula Democratic Coalition.

The film examines a pair of personal tragedies, including the kidnapping and murder of Polly Klass, along with the politicians and radio stations which helped California pass its "three strikes" law.

The movie and discussion will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

The event is open to the public. No reservations are required.

Underground opens doors

The Los Altos Recreation Department's drop-in teen center, the Underground, will again be open this summer for students in grades 7-12 during the 1999-2000 school year.

The Underground is located in the basement of the Garden House at Shoup Park, 400 University Ave., Los Altos. The facility has pool and ping-pong tables, a big screen TV, and food and drinks for purchase. The Underground is supervised by city recreation staff.

Hidden Villa closed for camps

Hidden Villa, a 1,600-acre environmental education camp and wilderness preserve in Los Altos Hills, will be closed to the general public through Aug. 21 while its summer camp program is in session.

The preserve, located on Moody Road, will be open on select weekends during the summer for guided farm tours and use of hiking trails.

The following dates will be open to the public: Saturday and Sunday, July 24-25 and Aug. 7-8.
