Davenport, Williams commit to Bank of the West Classic

Some of the finest women's tennis players in the world will be playing down the road at Stanford University next week.

The Bank of the West Classic opens Monday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The 29th annual event concludes Aug. 1.

The $500,000 tournament is made up of 28 singles players and 16 doubles teams.

Players scheduled to compete include defending champion Lindsay Davenport - the top-ranked pro in the world - plus standouts Venus Williams, Anna Kournikova, Iva Majoli, Mary Joe Fernandez, Amanda Coetzer and Conchita Martinez.

The Bank of the West Classic claims to be the world's oldest pro women's tournament.

Day matches start at 11 a.m., Monday and noon, Tuesday through Saturday. Night matches begin at 7:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The finals are at noon, Sunday.

Tickets are $10-$35 for day and night sessions held Monday through Thursday, July 29. Tickets to day and evening semifinal sessions on Friday, July 30 are $12-$40. Tickets to the finals on Sunday, Aug. 1 range from $20-$60.
