The win improved the Clash's Major League Soccer record to 11-8 and retained its hold on fifth place in the MLS West. Chicago failed to score on all four of its shootout attempts, with Cannon making three saves. Cannon, a rookie, is 5-1 in shootouts, having yielded only eight goals in 28 attempts. The Clash rallied from a two-goal deficit late in the game to force overtime. Goals came from Dario Brose (73rd minute) and Richard Mulrooney (81st). Cannon preserved the tie with two stellar saves against Ante Razov in the closing moments. "That's a shootout win we can really be proud of, coming back from two goals down, against a team as good as Chicago, in their building," Clash Coach Brian Quinn said. "But what pleases me most is that when we were down 2-0 our guys never gave up, they kept coming back. That's a trait to be proud of in this team." The Clash, which won for the first time in four tries at Soldier Field, extended its MLS record for single-season shootout victories to nine and tied D.C. United's year-old record for most shootouts in a season: 10. In Friday's shootout, Ronald Cerritos converted in the first round and Scott Bower in the fifth. The Clash plays at Kansas City at 5 p.m., Saturday. Ambassadors prevail The Silicon Valley Ambassadors, the area's minor league soccer team, beat the Stanislaus County Cruisers 3-1 last Saturday at Palo Alto High. Tony Chang scored two goals for the Ambassadors and Gavin Glinton was responsible for the other. |
