The poll ranked district scores for reading and math at the fourth-, eighth- and 11th-grade levels. Los Altos Elementary School District was first in the ranking of reading scores in the fourth and eighth grades, with 95 percent of students receiving scores above the 50th percentile. The district also was first in math scores at the eighth-grade level, with 96 percent of students above the 96th percentile. It was second in fourth-grade math scores, behind Las Lomitas Elementary School District in San Mateo County. "We always know we do very well, but to be number one is really exciting," said Superintendent Marge Gratiot. She said that the principal and vice principal of the Las Lomitas school that scored number one in math will be principals in the Los Altos district next year. The AP ranked districts according to the percentage of students scoring above the 50th percentile. The rankings include only those districts in which more than 100 children took the test. This year's results of the state's Standardized Testing and Reporting program or STAR, were released July 21. The testing covers students in grades 2-11. |
