The Mountain View-Los Altos Major All-Stars, comprised of 11- and 12-year-olds, placed second in last month's District 44 fast-pitch softball tournament.

MV-LA went 2-2 in the double-elimination tourney, held July 15-22 at Ortega Park in Sunnyvale. The local all-stars beat Sunnyvale National and Sunnyvale Southern, but could not get past powerhouse Sunnyvale Metro, which beat them twice.

In the opening game against a scrappy National team, it took an extra inning to decide the outcome. The score was tied at 5 in the sixth, but the combination of Stephanie Benetua's pitching (12 strikeouts) and seventh-inning hitting by Rachel McGillis was enough to give MV-LA a 9-7 win.

The next game, against Metro, MV-LA's Thyra Dewey perhaps gave her best pitching performance of the season. However, MV-LA couldn't capitalize on her hard work. The team went into a batting slump and made some defensive mistakes that resulted in an 8-3 loss.

Now in the loser's bracket, MV-LA bounced back against Southern. The locals trailed for most of the game but continually fought back behind hitting from Easton Henrikson, Sandra Clark and Holly Burian for 15-13 win.

This put MV-LA in the championship round against undefeated Metro.

MV-LA didn't have a full compliment of pitchers for the game and turned to Amber Barton, who hadn't pitched much during the season. However, she a had fine showing against a mighty Metro lineup. The team's defensive mistakes haunted them, though, and Metro prevailed 19-9.
