Writing high

Estee Wang of Gunn High in Palo Alto is one of three students to receive this year's Art Rosenbaum High School Sportswriting Awards. Wang was presented with a $1,000 scholarship at a ceremony held July 22 at 3Com Park before the San Francisco Giants' baseball game against the San Diego Padres. The awards are sponsored by the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.

Run for fun

The Chronicle Classic, a five-mile run hosted by the Palo Alto Recreation Department, is set for Aug. 15 in downtown Palo Alto. Race-day registration starts at 7 a.m. and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. The starting line is the corner of Hamilton and Cowper streets. Registration is $25 on race day and includes a T-shirt. Prizes include a trip for two to Hawaii for the top male and female finishers, plus medals for the top three in each age division. A party with food, music and drawings is planned for after the race. Kicking camp

Pinewood School in Los Altos Hills next week hosts its final soccer camp of the summer. Run by Pinewood coaches Cory Cullinan and Tia Brown, the camp is for seventh through 12th graders. The camp goes from 2 to 5 p.m., Aug. 9-13. The focus is on building both skills and strategy on the soccer field. Cost is $85, which includes a T-shirt. Golf Web site

The Senior Golfers Association of America has launched a Web site for amateur golfers 50 and over. The site (www. seniorgolfersamerica.com) offers information about membership, golf course reviews, golfing tips and details about amateur tournaments held throughout the United States.
