The team of 15- and 16-year-old Pony Baseball players featured three members from Los Altos: Mark Kolich, Chris Virgilio and Jeff Wickware. Santa Clara Valley fell 6-3 to South San Francisco in the semifinal round, played July 30 in San Jose. The game started off with South San Francisco scoring three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. That proved to be all the runs South San Francisco would need, as Santa Clara Valley was held to just three runs on four hits. Half of these hits came from Derrick Yamada, who was 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored. Tony Lopez of San Jose and Tony Perez of Campbell had a hit and an RBI each. Bill Heaton of San Jose started for Santa Clara Valley and was the pitcher of record. He was relieved by Blake Barr of Campbell, who pitched three scoreless innings in relief. Santa Clara Valley advanced to the semifinals the prior day by winning a doubleheader. Overall, the team finished third in the double-elimination Region Tournament with a 6-2 mark. Santa Clara Valley's leading hitter was Virgilio of Los Altos, who batted .461. He also led the team with eight RBI. Perez topped the team in hits (10), doubles (3) and runs (8). He also was Santa Clara Valley's best pitcher, winning three games. Heaton won two games and Yamada one. |
