Schools Roundup

The Los Altos School District is scheduled to unveil preliminary renovation plans for Covington School during a public meeting at 7 p.m., Sept. 13, at the district office, 201 Covington Road.

Superintendent Marge Gratiot said committee members are still in the process of developing site plans for the school, but will show Covington neighbors "where we are now and make sure they give us some suggestions before we finalize any plans."

The school is scheduled to reopen as the district's seventh elementary school in fall 2001.

Gratiot said the proposed plan currently includes the renovation of many of the existing school buildings and the construction of a library, and about five classrooms. The plan also includes moving the district offices and the current maintenance yard.

LASD endorses proposed utility tax

Members of the Los Altos School District Board of Trustees unanimously agreed during a special meeting Aug. 9 to endorse a proposed ballot measure to raise the city of Los Altos utility-user tax.

If approved this November, the measure would raise the city's utility-user tax from 3.5 to 6.25 percent and could generate an additional $1.2 million annually, which would fund public safety, recreation and maintenance programs in the city.

The school district was among several groups that, at the city's request, held special meetings last week to consider endorsing the measure. The deadline for ballot endorsements was 5 p.m., Aug. 9.
