Taking the first step in what it hopes will be a late-season run at the Major League Soccer playoffs, the San Jose Clash came from behind to score two second-half goals last Thursday for a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution.

Goalkeeper Joe Cannon of Los Altos Hills helped the Clash cause by making six saves.

"He came up big for us a few times," Clash coach Brian Quinn said. "They had a couple of chances to go up 2-0, and then a chance or two to go up 2-1, but he made some big saves."

Dario Brose and John Doyle scored for the visiting Clash, which improved its record to 12-10 (18 points) and solidified its hold on fifth place in the MLS West.

The Clash, 13 points in arrears with 10 games to play, kept alive its chances of finishing among the top four and earning a playoff spot.

"We've still got a long way to go, but hopefully this was a start," Quinn said.

The Clash and Revolution meet again at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at Spartan Stadium in San Jose.

"That'll be an important game for us; they're all important now," Quinn said. "We've got a string together a few three-point victories."

Last Thursday, before a crowd of 13,427 and a national television audience, the Clash wiped out a 1-0 halftime deficit on Doyle's goal in the 54th minute.

Moments later, it appeared the Revolution would regain the lead, but Cannon made a diving save on Joe-Max Moore's shot from point-blank range.

Brose scored the winning goal for the Clash in the 77th minute.

New England's lone goal came six minutes into the match when Ted Chronopoulos got a shot past Cannon.
