Cannon helps save Clash from defeat

Helped by three saves from goalkeeper Joe Cannon of Los Altos Hills, the San Jose Clash edged the visiting New England Revolution 2-1 last Saturday night at Spartan Stadium.

The win kept alive the Clash's slim hopes of making the Major League Soccer playoffs.

Alejandro Sequeira scored the winning goal in the 63rd minute for the Clash, which improved to 13-10. Ronald Cerritos scored the first goal for San Jose in the 14th minute and assisted on the second.

St. Francis High graduate Cannon preserved the Clash's one-goal lead in the 28th minute by diving to his right to make a difficult save on a well-struck shot by Ted Chronopoulos.

But New England (8-15) tied the score on a rather strange goal in the 37th minute. Off a Jeff Baicher free kick from just outside the penalty area, Joe-Max Moore dribbled into the box and struck a shot that was deflected off the crossbar by defender Mauricio Wright. But the ball bounced right back to Moore, whose first-time volley beat a helpless Cannon inside the far post.

The Clash returns to MLS action at 7:30 p.m., Saturday against the visiting MetroStars.
