Los Altos police officers will be stopping drunk drivers at a checkpoint this Saturday as part of the annual Labor Day weekend "Avoid the 13" crackdown on drinking and driving.

From 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., on Saturday, police will be snapping the cuffs on intoxicated drivers who come through the checkpoint at El Monte Road at Milverton Avenue in Los Altos.

The four-day Labor Day weekend campaign to curb drinking and driving begins this Friday and continues until midnight Monday.

"Labor Day weekend is the official end of summer, but far too often it is the beginning of a lifetime of grief for families and friends of those killed by people who choose to drink and drive," said Chief David Gullo of the Campbell police, campaign chairman.

This is the first time that police from the Peninsula, Silicon Valley and the East Bay have combined to fight the holiday weekend with the worst reputation for people injured in DUI crashes, said Jan Ford, spokeswoman for the "Avoid the 13" campaign.

Only New Year's weekend surpasses Labor Day for DUI fatalities, according to the California Highway Patrol.
