Ronald Cerritos' goal with 24 seconds to play forced a shootout last Saturday, and John Doyle scored the winning goal in the tiebreaker as the San Jose Clash stole a 2-1 victory over the MetroStars in a Major League Soccer game at Spartan Stadium.

Clash goalkeeper Joe Cannon of Los Altos Hills saved Mark Semioli's attempt in the seventh round of the shootout, and Doyle made the game-winner.

Eddie Lewis, Dario Brose and Alejandro Sequeira also scored in the shootout for the Clash, which improved its record to 14-10, climbing four games above the .500 mark for the first time in club history. By winning its third consecutive game and extending to 11 its league record for shootout victories in one season, the Clash (22 points) kept alive its hopes of challenging Dallas (14-12, 38 points) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the MLS West.

Cannon also made a key play in the 33rd minute of the game when he made what may have been his finest save of the year. The MetroStars pushed a pass through the Clash defense to Brian Kelly, who raced into the box for a clear one-on-one opportunity against Cannon. But the Clash goalie came off his line and made a sliding deflection of Kelly's shot.

The Clash will play at home again Saturday against Kansas City at 7:30 p.m.
