Bicyclists can support leukemia research Sept. 19 by pedaling through the nearby hills, as part of the fifth annual Ben Eckenhoff Memorial Bike Ride.
Organizers said the event is meant as a fun ride - not a race - through Portola Valley, Woodside and Palo Alto. Participants can take a 10-, 20-, or 35-mile course.
The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning in ALZA's building Q parking lot at 2627 Hanover St., Palo Alto.
Cyclists' $25 donation supports hematology research at Stanford Medical Center, and each participant will receive a T-shirt and lunch.
The J. Benjamin Eckenhoff Fund was created in 1995 by friends and family of Eckenhoff, who died in 1994 after a long battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
The endowment supports research in CLL and other autoimmune diseases.
Eckenhoff, a longtime resident of Los Altos, worked as the principal engineer at ALZA.
To participate in the memorial bike ride, cyclists can register up to and including Sept. 19. However, to insure a correct shirt size, participants should submit a registration form by today to Cindy Sherwood, 1062 S. Daniel Way, San Jose 95128, or to cindy.sherwood@roche.com.
