Some might be expecting the first of a Y2K barrage this Thursday - after all, the date 9/9/99 is expected to confuse computers and cause malfunctions. However, at least one Los Altos art gallery will be partying.
The public is invited to join a "Nines party" Thursday at Gallery 9, 143 Main St. The gallery will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. that day. The party will begin at 5 p.m. Just before 9 p.m., artists and guests will step outside to hear the plaza clock chime the final "9."
The featured exhibit, on view through Sept. 25, includes recent etchings by Elaine Rothwell and sculptures by Kirsten Stein.
Rothwell, a Los Altos resident since 1965, received her art training at San Jose State University. In Rothwell's latest series of six black-and-white etchings, "Inklings," she uses familiar figures and settings from art history to express attitudes about the end of the millennium. Her "Four Seasons of Romance" is also presented.
Stein studied art in her native Denmark before settling in Palo Alto in 1970. Best known for her minimalist ceramic figures, she will also present work in bronze and stone in this exhibit.
The exhibit may be previewed online through "State of the Arts," a local artists' network, at www.soarts.com/gallery9.
