New computer classes at UCSC

The University of California Extension, Santa Cruz, is offering a variety of computer-related courses this fall including: "Web Design Using GoLive" from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Sept. 9-Oct. 28; "Introduction to Lingo," a hands-on intermediate Web-design course, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 10- Oct. 1; "Web Design, An Overview," a workshop outlining design possibilities for Web pages," from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 11; "Introduction to QuarkXPress" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mondays Sept. 13-14,20-21; and "Web Design Hands-On Basics" from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 14- Oct. 12.

October dates for ACT

The ACT assessment, a leading college entrance and placement exam, will be administered nationwide on Oct. 23. The registration postmark deadline is Sept. 17. Late registration postmark deadline is Oct. 1. There is an additional fee for late registration.

ACT scores are accepted or preferred by more four-year colleges than any other college entrance and placement exam, according to school officials. ACT scores are accepted at all Ivy League colleges.

The test fee is $22.

'Crossroads' at Stanford

Stanford University's continuing studies program is offering a set of five-week courses that study history's greatest civilizations this fall. Students will examine a different civilization in each class through its mythology, literature, art and philosophy.

Stanford instructor Edward Steidle will teach the series. Steidle has lived in France, Italy and Spain. He has a doctorate in comparative literature.

This year's series includes the study of the medieval world from Islamic Spain to medieval Japan. The series will begin on Sept. 28 with the "Age of Charlemagne," a look at medieval Europe. "Conquest, Crusade, and Cloister," a class about the impact of the Normans on the 11th century, begins Nov. 2. Each class runs for five weeks, meeting from 7-8:50 p.m., Tuesdays.

Registration for all Continuing Studies classes began Aug. 23.
