Mountain View High and Pinewood School both bowed out in the quarterfinals of last Saturday's Lynbrook Invitational.

Mountain View fell to Palo Alto 15-11, 15-1, while Pinewood lost to powerhouse Monta Vista 15-12, 15-0.

"We hung in there in the first game and played pretty well," Pinewood coach Cindy Osmanian said.

For the tournament, Katie Collins led the Panthers with 24 kills, five blocks and four assists.

Earlier in the week, host Mountain View defeated Pinewood 16-14, 15-5, 13-15, 15-9 in a non-league match played Sept. 7.

Cassandra Damm topped the Spartans with 14 kills and "played an excellent game," coach Peter Kim said.

Mountain View followed that match with a five-game loss at Leland, 15-9, 13-15, 11-15, 15-12, 15-9, last Thursday. The Spartans doomed themselves in the final game by allowing seven straight points.

Mountain View was led by Damm (10 kills), Kristen Kizer (28 assists) and Julie Piazza (5 blocks).

That same day, Pinewood lost to host Cupertino 10-15, 15-6, 15-9, 15-10. The Panthers only forced two sideouts the entire second game and "the passing wasn't really there," Osmanian said.

Collins had five kills and two blocks for Pinewood.

Pinewood split its two games last week, putting the team's overall record at 1-2.

The Panthers lost to Pescadero 5-1 Thursday, getting their lone goal from junior Aldo Ceja.

Two days earlier, Pinewood blanked North Valley Baptist 5-0. Both games were played in Los Altos Hills.

Panthers coach Michael Tetzlaff is encouraged by what he's seen from his young team, which consists of six freshman, six sophomores, two juniors and four seniors.

"I've seen some good things so far," the fourth-year coach said, "and we hope to do better than last year when we didn't win a league game."

Pinewood hosts Liberty Baptist Thursday (3:30 p.m.) and then travels to Valley Christian Dublin Friday (3:30 p.m.) for its Private Schools Athletic League opener.

St. Francis captured the Mitty Invitational last Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Palo Alto.

The Lancers took a 3-0 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Meg Knudtsen led St. Francis with two goals. Knudtsen and teammate Tiffany O'Farriell each made the all-tournament team.

With all but three players returning from last year, the Gunn High girls tennis team expects to be competitive in the always-tough SCVAL De Anza Division.

"I don't think we'll win the championship, but we'll be in every match we play," coach Stephanie Adcock said. "We'll give teams a run for their money."

The fourth-year coach is looking to finish among the top four teams in the De Anza, which features the likes of St. Francis, Monta Vista, Saratoga and Los Altos.

The Titans are off to a 2-0 start in non-league play, recording a pair of easy road wins against Pinewood and Mountain View last week.

Gunn beat Mountain View 7-0 Thursday, winning every match in straight sets. Two days before that, the Titans took care of Pinewood 5-0 in a competition that ended prematurely due to rain.

"We look very good, and I think we're a little stronger than last year," said Adcock, who led Gunn to an 11-6 record and a spot in the playoffs a season ago. "We have good singles players and our doubles teams are coming along."

Gunn's singles lineup, from No. 1-4, consists of Li-Ying Wang, Christine Feng of Los Altos Hills, Lauren Glasscock and Gabbi Hernandez, a promising freshman.

The top three doubles teams are made up of Tanya Cheng-Michelle Feng, Neha Agarwal-Katherine Wang and Nora Hanafy-Jennifer Hamilton. Cheng, Agarwal and Hanafy are all from Los Altos Hills.

The Titans opened division play yesterday against Palo Alto and they travel to Saratoga Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. match.

In other local tennis action, St. Francis High won both its matches last week to improve to 3-0. The Lancers beat both Crystal Springs Upland and Burlingame by 6-1 scores.

Homestead High, meanwhile, opened its season with a 6-1 loss to host Saratoga.

St. Francis lost 5-4 to host Bellarmine last Saturday in the third-place game of the Schmitt Tournament.

Steve Lipinski and Conor Duignan scored two goals apiece for the Lancers.
